The Liberal Democrats in the South Cotswolds have achieved a historic result in the recent local elections, securing control of both Gloucestershire County Council and Wiltshire Council for the first time. In a landmark moment, Cllr Lisa Spivey has been elected the first Liberal Democrat—and first female—Leader of Gloucestershire County Council.

These results mark a significant shift in local politics, as the Liberal Democrats topple long-standing Conservative councillors while building upon over a decade of growing support across the Cotswolds.

New Leadership for Gloucestershire

Cllr Lisa Spivey, re-elected to represent the South Cerney division, now leads Gloucestershire County Council as the first Female leader. She pledges to tackle key local issues including crumbling roads, the social care crisis, and the cost-of-living pressures facing residents.

“I am delighted to have been re-elected to represent our corner of the county,” said Lisa. “It’s an honour to be elected the first Liberal Democrat, and the first woman leader, of the County Council. We will prioritise fixing our roads and pavements, fighting for public services and tackling flooding.”

In her acceptance speech, Lisa encouraged the different parties to work together despite their differences.

Also appointed to the new administration is Cllr Joe Harris, former Leader of Cotswold District Council, who will serve as Cabinet Member for Highways, Maintenance and Communications.

On Cotswold District Council, Cllr Mike Evemy, who represents Siddington and Cerney Rural, has been elected as the new Leader, following Cllr Harris’s decision to step down after six years.

“It is an honour to serve Cotswold residents as the Council leader,” said Mike. “Our administration will remain focused on delivering high-quality services for our communities and continuing the great work done under Joe’s leadership.”

Liberal Democrat Gains in Wiltshire

Across the border in Wiltshire, South Cotswolds Liberal Democrats continue to play a key role in shaping local government.

Cllr Gavin Grant, South Cotswolds Party Chair, has been appointed as the Cabinet Member for Finance, taking responsibility for Wiltshire’s financial strategy. Also, Cllr Martin Smith, who represents Sherston, has become Cabinet Member for Highways, Streetscene and Flooding, tasked with addressing long-standing concerns over road maintenance.

These results have reinforced the growing popularity of the Liberal Democrats in the South Cotswolds, setting the stage for continued progress in the years ahead.
